What Open Auto Transport Actually Means (and What Happens to Your Car)

Open auto transport is the most common way vehicles are shipped across the country. Your car is loaded onto an open multi-car carrier — the same kind of truck you've seen on the highway hauling several vehicles at once — and driven to its destination. It's the standard method used by auto dealers, manufacturers, and millions of private customers every year.

Your vehicle is secured with professional tie-downs at all four wheels and travels exposed to the elements — meaning open air, not enclosed in a trailer. For the overwhelming majority of vehicles, this is completely safe and the most practical option available. The carriers we work with are licensed, insured, and experienced in handling everything from everyday sedans to SUVs and pickup trucks.

Is Open Transport Safe? Here's What We Tell Every Customer

Yes — and we'll be straight with you about it. Open transport is safe for the vast majority of vehicles. The risk of weather or road debris causing damage is real but rare, and the carriers in our network are professionals who transport vehicles every single day without incident.

With over 25 years in this industry — starting as a carrier ourselves before becoming a broker — we know exactly what separates a reliable carrier from a careless one. We only assign shipments to carriers we trust. Every carrier we use is vetted for their DOT registration, insurance, safety record, and track record before we place your vehicle with them.

If your vehicle is a luxury car, a classic, or has significant sentimental or monetary value above and beyond a standard vehicle, we may recommend enclosed transport instead. We'll always give you our honest recommendation — not just the one that makes us more money.

What's Included in Your Quote — and What's Never a Surprise

When you request a quote from EZ Auto Logistics, you receive a detailed email that walks through the entire process step by step — pricing, timeline, carrier selection, and what to expect at pickup and delivery. Everything is in writing before you pay a single dollar.

Our pricing reflects what it actually costs to secure a reliable, vetted carrier for your specific route. We sit in the mid to upper-mid range compared to other quotes you'll receive — and that's intentional. A quote that's hundreds of dollars lower than everyone else is almost always bait. Either the price goes up later, or your car sits unassigned because no quality carrier will accept that rate.

We will never surprise you with hidden fees. What you see in your quote is what you pay. And if market conditions allow us to bring your price down, we'll always do that too.

How We Pick the Carrier Hauling Your Vehicle

This is where 25 years of experience makes a real difference. We don't just post your order to a load board and hope for the best. We actively match your shipment to carriers we know and have worked with — carriers with strong safety ratings, proper insurance, and a history of on-time, damage-free deliveries.

Before any carrier is assigned to your order, we verify their MC and DOT numbers, insurance coverage, and safety record. Once a carrier is confirmed, you receive a full email with the carrier's information and specific instructions for pickup — including what to look for when the driver arrives to verify it's the correct carrier.

At pickup, always check the driver's ID, the company name, and the DOT and MC numbers displayed on the truck. This takes two minutes and is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself and confirm the right carrier has arrived.

What to Expect From Pickup Day to Delivery

Here's exactly how the process works once your order is placed:

First, we assign a carrier to your route and send you a confirmation email with all carrier details and pickup instructions. From your first available ship date, we work within a pickup window — initially 4 to 5 days — which narrows to 1 to 2 days as we get closer to your date. You'll receive the driver's name, cell phone number, and a 4 to 6 hour pickup window before they arrive.

At pickup, the driver completes a Bill of Lading — a vehicle inspection form that documents the current condition of your car. Review it carefully and note any existing damage before signing. This document protects you at delivery.

During transit, your agent remains available to answer questions. The driver will also call as they approach your delivery location. At delivery, inspect your vehicle against the Bill of Lading before signing off. If anything looks different, note it on the form before the driver leaves.

For most routes, open transport delivers within 1 to 2 weeks depending on distance. California to the East Coast, for example, typically runs 6 to 8 days under standard transport conditions.

Open vs. Enclosed: How to Know Which One You Need

Open transport is the right call for most vehicles — everyday cars, SUVs, trucks, minivans, and standard motorcycles. It's faster to schedule, more widely available, and significantly more affordable than enclosed shipping.

Enclosed transport makes sense when your vehicle has high monetary or sentimental value that goes beyond a standard vehicle — classic cars, luxury vehicles, exotic cars, or anything where cosmetic protection during transport matters significantly. Enclosed carriers shield your vehicle from weather and road debris inside a fully covered trailer.

If you're not sure which is right for your vehicle, call us. We'll give you our honest take based on what you're shipping and where it's going — not based on which option costs more. You can also learn more on our Enclosed Auto Transport page.

How Much Does Open Auto Transport Cost?

Pricing varies based on several factors: the route, distance, vehicle type, time of year, and how flexible your pickup window is. There is no single flat rate for open auto transport because every shipment is different.

As a general reference point, shorter regional routes may run a few hundred dollars while cross-country shipments typically range higher depending on conditions. Spring through fall is peak season with higher demand, and the holiday and snowbird seasons also drive prices up. Fuel costs and supply and demand among carriers affect pricing on any given week.

The best way to get an accurate number is to request a quote 2 to 3 weeks before your first available ship date — close enough that the quote reflects current market conditions, with enough lead time to secure the right carrier at the best available rate.

Our pricing sits in the mid to upper-mid range because we price shipments to actually get your car moved by a reliable carrier — not to win your business with a number we can't deliver on.

Why Customers Come Back to Us After Trying Someone Cheaper

We hear this story regularly. A customer gets multiple quotes, goes with the lowest one, and ends up calling us weeks later after their car sat unassigned, the price was raised at the last minute, or the company went silent when problems came up.

We're not the cheapest option. We're honest about that. But we are the option that picks up the phone, keeps you informed, assigns a vetted carrier, and delivers your vehicle the way we said we would. Our reviews on Yelp, Google, Facebook, and the BBB — where we've maintained an A+ rating with zero complaints since 2013 — reflect what that consistency looks like over time.

One customer described calling us after a nightmare experience with another company. Her departure date was days away and no carrier was lined up. We found a carrier, kept her updated the entire way, and her vehicle arrived on time and undamaged. That's not a lucky outcome — it's what happens when you work with people who know what they're doing.
